Better late than never, the saying goes. December is well past and I have no real excuse for my tardiness. Ah well. After a long siege, midPhase finally broke BlueHost's grip on the number one spot. Congrats, guys! Other notable movements include Dreamhost continuing its ascent in the ranks, and Aplus returning after more than a year out of the top ten. Remember, remember, the fifth of November. And so on. The only real news is you folks seem to have finally discovered DreamHost. An excellent host that deserves serious attention. Otherwise, same old, same old, modulo some minor shuffling. I'd blame it on the tryptophan, but Thanksgiving is too late in the month. Maybe it was sugar coma from Halloween leftovers. Happy Hosting! October is probably my favorite month of the year. No, it is not my birthday (that's in November, please send cash). Or my anniversary. One of my children was born in October, but the other wasn't and I don't play favorites. October is my favorite for two reasons. Halloween and blustery weather. I just love it when the wind kicks up and the air pressure drops. Nostalgia aside, however, October was a BORING month for hosting. I could almost have cut-and-pasted last months popular list (but I didn't!). Startlogic and midPhase traded places. HostGator popped back onto the list and Globat popped back off. Yawn. September always seems like such a nice quiet month. Maybe it's because all the kids are back in school. Maybe it's because we can finally turn off the A/C now and then (and turn on the heat instead at other times). Well, in terms of hosting, it was quiet from what I saw. Not only fewer signups, but not much shakeup in the popular hosts either. Yeah, Globat popped back onto the list after a looooong absence, but the list was otherwise almost stagnant. People's preferences were the same in September as they were in August. On the positive side, lots of changes coming to the site. Updates to the Globat, Yahoo, 1&1, and BlueHost reviews. Ah, autumn is coming at last. Those dog days of summer were killing me. Anyway, things didn't move around too much in July. Yahoo slipped a few spots. EasyCGI advanced a few. The only real surprise was inMotion's sudden reappearance on the list (after a looooong absence). I guess people finally noticed their plan enhancements. On the other hand, Simplehost continues to outrank PowWeb, despite their behind-the-times bandwidth allowance and PowWeb's very competitive plan. Go figure. Last updated 03-Sep-2006

The air in July might be stagnant, but the top list has not been entirely so. Most notable is StartLogic's inexplicable jump from ninth to third. Don't get me wrong; I like change, but I like to understand the reason behind the change. Not sure why people suddenly loved StartLogic in July, but they did. Otherwise we have much of the same. 1&1 dropped a few spots to fifth from second, which is probably closer to where the really belong. So I have been thinking about fortune cookie wisdom. "May you live in interesting times." Here I've been complaining for months that not much changes in the popularity lists. Well, June got a little more interesting. 1&1 up four places; Simplehost up three; Startlogic down five; PowWeb gone again and EasyCGI back again. In fact, the only hosts that stayed in the same places were perennial favorite BlueHost at #1, my own favorite host MidPhase at #3, and Lunarpages which remains marooned at #7 for some reason. Remember spring? That not-too-hot, not-too-cold season nestled between winter and summer? Seems like every year, we get less and less of spring and practically sprint into summer. April shower might bring may showers, but April seems to have been very sunny for StartLogic which burst into the top 5 from out of nowhere. Their revised plans are very good, and you took notice. The showers seem to have fallen instead on PowWeb, which got knocked out of the top 10 for the first time since we started watching such things. Not sure what the deal is there, as their plans remain strong and their "zero downtime" architecture is nicely designed. Everyone else continued to jockey for position as usual. February. Can you say "bleak"? Everything here has been grey, gray, grey, gray, however you want to spell it. Luckily the hosting world has been a little more interesting. midPhase upped their plans to be consistent with those from their sister-brand ANHosting and thereby retook second place. Yahoo! continues its rise and has broken the top five. The rest of the list look pretty familiar. The promised revised Yahoo! review and the much asked for DreamHost review are coming soon. Winter in Pittsburgh has been mild so far (which is fine by me) and January has looked a lot like December. The big exception was SimpleHost, which yoyoed back to 9th after having been 5th in December and 10th in November. iPowerweb/StartLogic/iPower fell off the list while EasyCGI bounced back. ANHosting seems to have settled into the top five nicely and Yahoo! has become a comfortable member of the list as well. Maybe February will bring some surprises. Last updated 01-Feb-2006
