1&1 offers a number of different types of hosting, including shared Windows and shared Linux hosting. Their Linux plan are solid and include a number of unique features that compensate for the higher price tag. These include a set of standard web forms, a newsletter manager, and a library of dynamically updating content that you can plug into your site. All pretty cool, actually.

1&1's Windows hosting sports the same ammenities, but with the Microsoft twist. Instead of MySQL, you get Access. Instead of PHP and Perl, you get ASP. Interestingly, unlike most other hosts, their Windows and Linux plans are priced the same, so you can choose the platform you want without penalty.
Another area where 1&1 shines is in dedicated servers. Not only do they offer an excellent range of servers, but their prices are more than fair. While not the cheapest in the industry, they are a ways better than some of the older guard who refuse to update their model.
1&1 offers two different types of server plans: root and managed. The main differences are the price and the level of support. With root servers, you pay a little less and take on all of the system administration tasks. With managed, you pay a bit more and save yourself a lot of headaches. If you feel up to it, the root servers are a great bargain; for those of us who want to concentrate on our sites and business, the managed servers are a welcome option. Regardless of which camp you fall into, you'll get all of 1&1's goodies: webmail, NetObjects Fusion, a form builder, a database builder, and all the usual development tools.
